Basic Plumbing Tools Every Home Should Have

Basic plumbing tools and how to use them

Every home should be installed with proper plumbing. A home is prone to mishaps if it isn’t fitted with the right installation of pipes, fixtures, and tanks! Fortunately, it’s easy to install plumbing. The only downside is maintaining your plumbing system. It requires a lot of effort on your part.

As a residential homeowner, it’s highly recommended to know some of the basic plumbing tools and how to use them. Once you get a hand of these tools, learning how to use them is easy! The next time you run into a plumbing supply store, take note of these essential tools.

Basin wrench (sink wrench)

Every plumber in Singapore should be equipped with a basin wrench. It’s a tool that’s used in confined spaces to turn fasteners that are hard to reach with other wrenches. For example, there are threaded nuts used for sinks that are usually located in hard-to-reach places.

A basin wrench works just like any other wrench. Its pivoting gripping head at the end of the long handle should reach inaccessible spaces behind a sink. Proceed to tighten or loosen the nut or bolt the way you see fit.

Hacksaw

Cut through metal and plastic pipes with the use of a hacksaw. The beauty of this tool is it can also be used for other hardware other than plumbing. Remember to keep extra blades in the event your hacksaw’s blade grows dull. Also, before cutting certain materials, make sure your blade is sturdy and strong enough.

Toilet plunger

It’s almost impossible to find a home without a toilet plunger! A plunger can be used for both sinks and toilets whenever drainage is clogged. Using a plunger is easy. If your sink or toilet is clogged, place your plunger on the drainage and push it repeatedly until the water sinks down the drain.

Adjustable wrench

The adjustable spanner or wrench is used for different reasons.  It’s an open wrench with a moveable jaw that can be used with different sizes of fastener heads. To use this tool, identify the nut or bolt you need tightening, then adjust the jaw to the size of the nut or bolt. Once it’s in place, use the wrench normally and proceed to turn it in a clockwise position to tighten it, or counter-clockwise to loosen it.

Pipe wrench

Pipe wrenches are designed with a stable lower jaw and an adjustable upper jaw for clutching hardware. It is used for loosening or tightening pipe joints. As you use a pipe wrench for plumbing, make sure the upper jaw doesn’t reach the end of the lower jaw, this might mean you’re gripping the pipe too tightly. Also, try to avoid using a pipe wrench on hard pipes because the tool might not grip on properly. The pipe wrench could suddenly slip off, which is dangerous.
